Software billionaire, Mike Cannon-Brookes, and his wife Annie have pledged up to $12 million to fund portable solar panel and battery systems to those left without power in the wake of the bushfires.

The collaboration between Cannon-Brookes and solar company 5B is called the Resilient Energy Collective and uses prefabricated solar panels in conjunction with Tesla’s Powerwall battery pack to generate and store electricity.

The prefabricated units can be folded up, packed on a truck, unfolded and connected to a site in less than a day.

The initiative will power up to 100 sites currently without power or relying on diesel generators.
